Mastering the Art of the Short Form
A writing workshop focused on narrative prose (short fiction or essays).
Course Description: Whether you are testing the field of writing, or are an experienced writer, you have to learn how to juggle all the pieces of the short form to create one seamless piece of art. This one-day intensive workshop will give you the opportunity to have your work reviewed by teacher and peers, and to learn techniques that will catapult you to the next level. While we will not focus on any one element of writing (setting, dialog, characterization, theme), we will touch on all of them as we learn to apply the “greased chute” technique for masterful writing. The subject of creativity will loom large during the weekend, although the focus of the workshop is on achieving mastery of craft. Class size is limited to five (minimum of three)!
This is a chance to unplug for a day, focus on your writing, form new friendships, refresh and share your knowledge, and learn from Sharon’s deep knowledge of craft, developed from 37 years of professional writing.
Who Should Enroll? Beginning to advanced writers with a specific piece of writing for which they want feedback. (See dates corresponding to class level.) While we will focus on shorter forms, any narrative prose, including the opening chapter of a novel, is welcome. Please limit your submission to 250 to 3,000 words. Remember, you have to read and critique five other students’ work and come prepared to discuss it, as well as your own.
Critique: In a writing workshop, you share your work with other students who will offer questions, praise, and suggestions for improvement. “Publishing” your work to a small workshop audience invested in your success is the fastest way to learn! Their feedback, along with guidance from the instructor, provides valuable information regarding your piece and develops you as a writer. Be committed to providing quality critique for others. Print out hard copy of the manuscripts you receive; read carefully and attentively; mark the manuscripts with respectful praise and suggestions.
Make sure to bring:
Cost: The cost for the day is $49.99 for seven hours of instruction, a critique of your work, and handouts! Compare this to other writing programs in the Denver area and you’ll realize what a deal this is.
To Register: Please use the contact form on this website to register. You will receive instructions about how to prepay for the workshop. You are not registered until payment is received, and with only five slots, this class fills up fast!

Writing Coach
Are you interested in exploring a career in writing? Have you always wondered if you could publish your work? Do you dream of writing a book?
You can take the slow route to finding the answers to those questions by sending your manuscripts off and getting rejections; by attending critique groups for years, where you also have to spend time reading other manuscripts; or paying for high priced writers conferences where no one pays any attention to you or your writing, and no one actually looks at your manuscript.
Or, you can hire Sharon to be your writing coach and jump start your writing career in just a few hours. Get the support you need as you write your own story, with immediate and direct feedback: word-by-word, line-by-line, story-by-story.
Sharon has been writing professionally -- yes, paid to write, since 1978. She has experience in almost every type of writing you can imagine, using almost every style book. Do you want that kind of success? Then learn from a writing pro!
